Microsoft Copilot or Claude?

Two excellent AI assistants — but not playing the same game. One is built into your office suite, the other is a thinking partner. Here is which to pick, based on what you expect.

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft · United States

Image generation

Copilot generates images (Designer, Image Creator in Paint). Claude does not: it only creates diagrams and charts, and analyses images you show it. If you want to produce visuals, the edge clearly goes to Copilot.

Your data & training

At Microsoft, training on your conversations is on by default: you must turn it off (France is not among excluded countries). At Anthropic, the choice is offered at signup — if you decline, your chats are kept 30 days; business accounts are excluded by default. Two different approaches to consent.

Our verdict

Choose Copilot if…

  • You live in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • You want AI already in Windows, nothing to install
  • You need to generate images
  • You already subscribe to Microsoft 365

Choose Claude if…

  • You write a lot: articles, reports, arguments
  • You want top-tier reasoning and nuance
  • You analyse documents or learn a topic in depth
  • You want to decide yourself how your data is used

Why not both? Many professionals use both: Copilot for everything Microsoft 365 and Windows, Claude for careful writing, analysis and code. The free tiers are enough to decide — run the same task on both before paying anything.

Frequently asked questions

Copilot or Claude: which one?

It depends on your use. Copilot shines where you already work — in Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows. Claude shines for careful writing, reasoning, document analysis and code. Neither is "better" in absolute terms: they target different needs.

Which protects my data best?

Both are US companies hosting your data outside Europe — neither offers European sovereignty for consumers. The difference is training: Copilot turns it on by default (you must opt out), while Claude asks you to choose at signup. Either way, never paste sensitive information into a public tool.

Can Claude create images?

No. Claude does not generate photos or illustrations: it only produces diagrams and charts (in SVG) and can analyse images you send it. To create visuals, Copilot is better suited (Designer, Image Creator in Paint).

Do I need to pay for either?

Not to start. Both have a free tier that is plenty to form an opinion. Copilot mostly becomes paid through a Microsoft 365 subscription (€10–22/mo) that adds it to the Office apps. Claude offers Pro (~$20/mo) for more usage and the most powerful models.

And for coding?

That is a different match. For developers, the comparison is rather Claude Code (Anthropic’s agent) vs GitHub Copilot: see our dedicated guide "AI that codes". This page compares everyday assistants, not developer tools.
